Vaccine Against Cancer: HPV is the First to Do It

It’s amazing to think that we now have a vaccine that can prevent one of the common and deadly types of cancer, cervical cancer, that kills over 5,000 women every year in the US. The HPV vaccine protects men and women from getting infected with human papilloma virus (HPV), which is the cause of cervial cancer, as well as several other types of cancer, including mouth and throat cancer and penile cancer.

The vaccine is very safe, and is recommended at 9-11 years of age. We usually give it along with the other vaccines recommended at age 11. Waiting longer than age 11 is not recommended as the effectiveness of the vaccine is less and less the longer you wait.
